Ch. 4&5 Summary

Ch. 4 & 5 Summary
By: Lorraine Henderson

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE for Ch.4

This chapter is about social dimension of data journalism , of finding material, of sharing it and collaborating with the public, puts the new practice of data journalism well within the realm of social journalism.

Introduction

  1. The world is full of data; financial data is probably the oldest form of data journalism.
  2. Data: Large amounts of information, often numeric, graphs, maps or other illustrative ways.
  3. Narrative function is essential to the process of data journalism and distinguishes news outlets from everyone else publishing data.
  • --Narrative function: to tell stories and make sense of raw information.

Finding Data

  1. Commissioned data
  • Most common example is commissioned polls, like political questions
  • Polling: Asking a range of people their opinions. Can be conducted by professional organizations or just a random person doing it on Twitter.
  1. Government and institutional data
  • Largest source for any news organization
  • When trying to find local data, try to make contact with the people who collate and manage the data in the area-- very useful for massaging the data you need.
  1. Freedom of information
  • FOIAs: Any legislation that guarantees the legal right of access to government or corporate information-- part of the stated democratic goal of transparency.
  1. Other Sources
  • Leaked sources= best friend’s with news organizations
  • Whistleblowers: People who revela (usually) criminal activity on the part of organizations to the gov’t or the press. In many countries, they are protected by the law, however, seek legal advice before proceeding.

Data Dumps

  • Disinformation: The deliberate spreading of false information via the media. Also discussed in Ch. 9.
  • WikiLeaks

Crowdsourcing

  • Uses the public to gather and share data and information about the community, from littering to transport problems.
  • Set up: asking for emails or tweet the newsroom, or as complex as creating a custom application to run people’s computers and smartphones.
  • Gamification: To bringing elements of interactivity and game-design mechanics into other disciplines to make them more engaging.

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE for Ch.5

This chapter will look at the ways in which new technologies allow users to aggregate, organize and share content, and how this is both a challenge and an opportunity for journalists.

Introduction

  • Distribution strategies play an integral part in rebooting journalism.

Search Engines

  • Good at looking through large sets of data and returning results based on keywords
  • Metadata: Pieces of content in terms of what is ‘behind the scenes’.
  • Referral traffic: A sophisticated range of metrics and analytical tools are being constantly developed to better understand how stories are distributed online

Adding the Aggregators

  • A key building block in distributing content around the internet
  • Search aggregation: Content can easily be delivered to you, either on a home page or reader, via RSS.
  • News aggregators: available news content on the web ad bundles it together.
  • QR codes: Two-dimensional matrix barcode that can be read by an appropriate app on smart phones.
Open API: Refers to the sets of technologies that enable websites to interact with each other.

My New WAVE

Doing this fashion and makeup blog will help me move in the direction that I think I want to take on. Fashion is not just about style, it's a lifestyle. As well as makeup for me. Fashion has always been in my life from the time I was five years old. My mom told me I could pick out my own outfit. For some reason I decided to wear all purple but back in the day that was style. Fashion also received my attention from one of my older sisters, Chanelle and her best friend at the time. I was around the age fifteen and sixteen and one afternoon after church was over we watched, “Sex and the City”. At first I wasn't a big fan of the television show and I think it's just because I was younger. After taking some time I finally was old enough to understand I realized the main character, Carrie Bradshaw, has a column in New York Observer and then eventually started making books and became a household name. After seeing that made me feel like it's possible to do something that I love to do and mix it up. Because I love to write but I don't want to write something I don't have any passion behind it. I'm also going to include makeup because fashion and makeup go hand and hand. Any fashion trends that go on includes what makeup goes along with it. Make up for me has been in my life for just the last couple of years and I love it o it when it was my senior prom and my friend was doing my makeup and I had to get this expensive lipstick. Good thing I still have it to this day, right? So here with this new blog I can’t wait to explore things that I haven’t tried but wanted to.

Self Portraits

This self portrait was just me taking in a moment of how nice my hair was and seeing how I could zoom in and learn how to focus better.

This one was from a photo shoot that was done for a radio show I have on campus with a few more classmates. This is like my signature pose for our radio show because I'm usually always thinking or give knowledge to people.

This portrait is of me doing a shoot for a video for WAUG and this was probably the stepping stone for me doing different things in my major.

This is of a picture of me posing in front of the North Hills Christmas tree that they put up every year in the beginning of December.
This is a funny self portrait of mine because it's a "Bitmoji" which is an emoji that looks like you and does different things or sayings. Also this is my favorite one because it says 'no'.

This self portrait is showing myself in three ways and I did this one because I thought this was basically saying there are always three sides that a story goes. His, Hers and the Trutth.

Day in the Life of a Sneakerhead

This is the beginning of the journey of a "Sneakerhead". In this day in the life blog, you will see where we go and what exactly what we are doing to get him some shoes. The person I documented is Gregory Poole. He has been collecting shoes for about a year now and has about 14 shoes in his collection. Gregory's first pair of shoes were a pair of "Three Peats" 8's but does not have them anymore because he sold them to one of his best friends, who also collects shoes. The process that we are doing today is the tickets. The tickets usually are only on Monday's and Tuesday's of the week that the shoes come out. On Sunday, Gregory made a list of all the shoes stores in Durham and Raleigh and called each store to figure out when they were doing tickets with a collective of 15 different stores. In the picture to the right, is us driving to a store to begin the process.
This picture is of Gregory at DTRL getting tickets for the Air Jordan 'Space Jams' 11's that will release on Saturday, December 10. This process is just waiting to get the ticket from the cashier. During this process you have to give them your ID and the cashier writes down your name, your shoe size and your number on the ticket.
This is picture is of Gregory writing down what store he received the ticket from. The reasoning of him doing this is because we went to 15 different stores. We went to different stores to guaranteed the chances of him getting the shoes on Saturday. The ticket process is you going to get a ticket and they do what I said in the last paragraph and then the store pulls a couple of names out of the box, bucket or whatever they put the tickets and the store will call you to tell you what time to pick up the shoes that Saturday morning.
This is Gregory looking at the different styles of shoes that Footlocker has. Usually when you go to the mall with a sneakerhead, they almost have to go to every shoe store in the mall. Mainly to see what the store has and if there is a pair of shoes that is a "rare cop", meaning those shoes are not just anywhere. Like for instance, those powder blue sneakers are not in the other stores that we went to together.

In this picture Gregory is looking at a pair of Saucony's. These are usually not as high price of a price like Jordan's. Those shoes run about $110 for a pair of shoes. This is called a "quality check". Gregory is inspecting how the shoes quality is. Meaning if the shoe was suede then he'll make sure that the shoe has a high quality of suede.

This is another picture of Gregory doing a quality check and also double checking how the shoe looks. Gregory also saw how the Saucony's run big and he said, "I would love to get them but they just look big on feet."

St. Agnes Hospital; Saving One Life at a Time

Saving over hundreds of patients at St. Agnes Hospital, these nurses are far from ordinary. Opening their doors in 1896 in Raleigh, North Carolina, where this was the only hospital for blacks from Atlanta to Washington, D.C. at the time.

"At one time, the hospital trained over 75% of east-coast black nurses," said Dr. Sills during the tour guide on Monday. Dr. Sills, a librarian at St. Augustine's University, took a group of students to the historical landmark to see how the hospital still stands. Sills began to talk about Sarah L. Hunter, who found the hospital and was the wife of the fourth president. After their families service to the university and the hospital, they were honored by having a building named after them.

"There were over 125 beds provided for the patients in the hospital," Sills said as he pointed to the windows, "this is also a wood-frame building and built by the male students and staff of the university." He later talk about the nurses training. "The nurses training included learning how to sew, scrubbing, cleaning and cooking." Sills then says there was "no running water" in the building so they had to constantly boil water. There were more than 800 interns and over 600 nurses received a diploma.

With all this information, I thank Mr. Sills for this experience and knowledge about this institution and hospital.

Mr. West isn't happy! Kanye West took the stage during his Saint Pablo show in Oakland, CA, on Oct. 22 to began a rant about his friend, Frank Ocean.

West threaten to boycott the 59th Grammy's if Ocean wasn't nominated for his two latest albums, "Blond" and "Endless". Although, West's request could be outweighed. According to Billboard, Ocean's label missed the Sept. 30 deadline, for reasons not made clear, for consideration despite both albums being released before the date.

"The album I listen to the most is Frank Ocean's album," West, 39, began. "I'll tell you this right now, if his album is not nominated in no categories, I'm not showing up to the Grammy's. As artist we've got to come together to fight the bullsh*t."

West also claims that the Recording Academy made exceptions for other artist, like Lady Gaga in 2010. "Gaga wasn't nominated for best artist, right? But they wanted her to perform at the show. So the Grammy's secretly changed something about the nominations in order to nominate her, in order for her to perform," West explains.

West then encouraged the head of the Grammy's to "come and holly at Ye."

The 2017 Grammy's nominations will be announced on December 8. The ceremony airs on CBS on February 12, 2017.
